This coin was awarded by the Commanding General, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing (MAW), Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, California.

In August 2002, James F. Amos was promoted to Major General and assumed command of the the 3rd MAW leading them in combat twice between 2003 and 2004 during Operations IRAQI FREEDOM I and II.
